In collaboration with Western Crops Innovations center (previously known as FCDC, Olds) to test the wintering habit of four winter wheat varieties (Pintail, AB Snowcat, AB Windchill and WT0050) when planted at three different dates. These varieties are planted in the last week of August and the first and second weeks of September. The survival rate will evaluated based on the seedling emergence in the fall and spring.

MARA is collaborating with Performance Seeds, based out of Lethbridge, to test out forage cereals developed by TriCal Superior Forage. These cereals include Gainer, Flex and Hybrid Surge Triticale, Oats, Barley and some cereal mixes (Triple Crown mix and Diverse mix).

Our team is conducting a comprehensive evaluation on Supra sorghum, Supra hay (Sudan grass), BMR sorghum and hybrid forage sorghum. These are being rigorously tested and compared to a BMR corn hybrid for forage quality and biomass yield, ensuring a thorough assessment.

Apart from these evaluations, MARA is evaluating the effect of Nutrient Plus (a biocatalyst) on Barley for silage/forage yield and quality. The catalyst can be used as a seed treatment in the furrow and foliar spray.

With the addition of barley, MARA is testing Polysulphate Premium (PSP) in its second-year of evaluation on barley and oats under conventional and organic systems.

We are also evaluating the efficacy of adding Crystal Green and the PSP under a conventional system. Both Polysulphate and Crystal Green are slow-releasing, natural fertilizer sources of Sulfur and Phosphorus, respectively. PSP is also composed of K, Mg, and Ca, which can be used for organic and conventional production systems. It provides balanced nutrients uniformly over the season for consistent crop development.
